Check your Canadian plan before buying anything
Open your account and confirm whether US roaming is included on the line you will use. If it is, review its usage conditions before paying for another package. Otherwise, request the eligible pass price and daily rate. Compare the actual extra trip cost, not your entire monthly phone bill.

Decide how you want to connect
- Included roaming or a pass: check dates, destinations, allowances and the events that trigger charges.
- A travel eSIM: confirm phone compatibility, US coverage, validity and the data you need. Compare the USA eSIM options for Canadian travellers.
- Wi-Fi only: airplane mode disables cellular connections; you can re-enable Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi calling still has carrier-specific billing rules.
Set up before crossing the border
Install your travel eSIM according to the seller’s validity and activation instructions. Select it for cellular data and disable automatic data switching where available. Follow its roaming settings separately from your Canadian line. Read our iPhone installation checklist if needed.

Data roaming off does not block every charge
Rogers’ billing guidance notes that outgoing texts, calls and voicemail access can still trigger charges under the applicable roaming arrangement. It also distinguishes Wi-Fi calls to Canadian and non-Canadian numbers. Confirm the rules for your own carrier rather than assuming every call over Wi-Fi is free. If you do not need your Canadian line, turning that line off prevents it connecting to a roaming network, but also affects incoming calls and verification texts. Arrange another sign-in method for important accounts before departure if needed.
For day trips and long stays
On a day trip, check the data line before your first use after crossing. Ask how the carrier defines a chargeable day rather than treating a visit as a fixed 24-hour period. For a longer US stay, verify package expiry and the cost of additional days or top-ups.
Keep maps, hotel details and support instructions offline. After returning to Canada, select your intended home data line and review any remaining travel-plan settings. No checklist guarantees zero charges for every device and plan.
